Translation

Catetory A : Under 13,000,000 KRW (depends on the length) for poetry
Under 16,000,000 KRW (depends on the length) for prose (novel, drama, and children’s literature).

Catetory B and C: 80% and 60% of the Category A

The cost of a complete translation will be partially covered.
(The subsidy will be determined based on the nature of the work and the conditions of local publication).
B.
Publishing

The grant amount may differ based on the probability of publication and the conditions of the local market.

In case of translation grants, if the workload is exceptionally extensive, additional compensation may be provided within the foundation's maximum limit (up to 5,000,000 KRW).

3. Eligibility

1)
Translation

A bilingual expert fluent in Korean and the target language (co-translation is also eligible)

A bilingual expert fluent in Korean and the target language regardless of nationality

Overseas publishers who wish to translate and publish Korean literary works into foreign languages

Overseas publishers interested in translating and publishing Korean literary works into other languages

Any professor, researcher or student specializing in Korean literature, as well as translators of Korean literature abroad

Overseas Institutions that focus on Korean literature
Individuals or organizations who failed to submit a required final report for previous grants by the deadline are ineligible for new applications.

4. Required Documents

Translation / Publication
a.
Sample translated manuscript in PDF format
Poetry : At least 20 poems
Novel, drama, and children’s literature, etc. : A minimum of 30 A4 pages of the translated manuscript, starting from the beginning of the work. The manuscript should be equivalent to 180 or more pages of 200-character manuscript paper.
Instructions when submitting translated manuscripts

The screening process is conducted without any disclosure of applicant information.
Please remove all personal information of the applicant from the work, including the applicant’s name.

Please use the A4 vertical format and submit it as a PDF file.

Hangul format: Use 10-point font size, letter space 100% and 160% line spacing
-
Word format: Use 10-point font size and 1.5 line spacing.

Please name the file ‘Langauge_Korean Title of the Work (Subject)’. (e.g., 영어_247의 모든 것)

Each applicant may submit one application per category.

5. Application Period

Applications must be submitted exclusively through the official
Late submissions, even if received, will not be reviewed. Applicants are encouraged to apply early to avoid potential server issues near the deadline.
We do not accept applications by post, in-person, via e-mail, or by other means.
The foundation is not responsible for any lost posts. Such submissions will not be returned.

7. Screening Process and Selection Announcement

1)
The screening committee will consist of scholars and translators specializing in Korean and relevant foreign literary literatures.
2)
Selection Criteria
▲ Translation/Research Skills demonstrated through the submitted sample translation or research application
▲ Literary/Research Value: The literary merit of the proposed work for translation or the relevance and significance of the research subject
▲ Feasibility: The practicality and clarity of the applicant's translation or research plan
▲ Publication Potential: The likelihood of securing a publication contract with the publisher indicated in the application.
3)
Date of announcement: Grant recipients will be notified both online and in person in August 2025.

8. Grant Cycle

1)
The approved subsidy will be disbursed in installments via transfers from a financial institution.
2)
The translation grant will be disbursed in two installments: 30% will be provided after the announcement, and the remaining amount will be granted upon submission of the completed translation and approval of its quality and accuracy by the evaluation committee.
3)
The research grant will also be distributed in two parts: 30% will be awarded after the announcement, and the remaining will be provided following the submission of the final research results and report.
4)
The publication grant will be disbursed in two installments, in accordance with the terms of the contract between the Foundation and the publisher.
* If an overseas publisher applies for the translation grant, a portion of the translation grant will be awarded directly to the translator.

9. Interim Report

Grant recipients are required to submit an interim report in the progress of the translation (research) along with, at least, fifty percent of the translation (research) within six months after receiving initial grant installment.

10. Translation (research) results

Translation (research) must be completed within the application period (1 year). However, if necessary, it can be extended by 6 months or 1 year through prior consultation with the foundation.
3)
The completed translation will undergo review by an evaluation committee.
4)
Once the translated manuscript successfully passes the committee's screening, the translator must first consult with the Foundation regarding its publication.
5)
The translation should be published in the country of the target language. Translators are expected to actively collaborate in securing a reputable publisher. Grant recipients must work closely with the publisher during the review of edited copies, proofs, cover design, cover text, and any other materials related to the publication process.
6)
Research findings should be published in academic journals or presented at academic conferences. Researchers are required to actively assist in securing a publisher and participate in editing and proofreading their work before publication.
7)
The copyright of the translation (research) belongs to the translator (researcher) or the author, or jointly, according to the translation agreement between the author and the translator(s) (researcher). However, the Foundation reserves the right to publish the translation (research results) and the translators' (researcher's) final reports in its own publications for the purpose to promote international recognition of Korean literature.
8)
Any translation or research project funded by the Foundation is not eligible for additional support from other organizations.

11. Obligation of the Grant Recipient

1)
If any illness, accident, or contingencies arise to prevent the grant recipients from fulfilling the terms of their contract it should be notified to the Foundation in writing.
2)
Grant recipients should not change the works to be translated without prior approval of the Foundation. If alteration and/or adjustment of the translation project becomes necessary, grantees should obtain prior approval from the Foundation.
3)
The Foundation's financial support should be clearly acknowledged in the preface or on the copyright page of the published book.
4)
When presenting the research results at an academic conference or publishing the results in an academic journal, the researcher should acknowledge receiving a research grant from the Foundation in the cover page or the preface. When publishing the results, the researcher must acknowledge that the research or the publication was made possible through a grant by the Foundation in the preface or the copyright page.
5)
After publication, the translator/researcher is required to promptly report any related news, promotion plans or achievements regarding the published book which received the grant from the Foundation. Also the translator/researcher should provide related data when the Foundation asks for the purpose of the news release.

12. Failure to Submit Final Report on Translation, Research, and Publication

If the grant period, including any extension, is exceeded and the final report on translation, research, or publication remain unsubmitted until the point of long-term delinquency classification according to Daesan Foundation policy, the grant must be returned to the Foundation. If the submitted material is found to be fraudulent, sanctions will be imposed on the translator or researcher in accordance with the Foundation's guidelines and the memorandum of agreement. These sanctions may include posting a notice on the Foundation's homepage detailing the translator's or researcher's misconduct.

13. Miscellaneous Information

1)
Application forms and materials submitted to the Foundation will not be returned.
2)
The Foundation reserves the right to cancel, suspend, or request the partial or full return of a grant under the following cases:
-
If false or misleading information is discovered in the application or supporting materials
-
If the grant recipients are found to have used the grant for purposes other than those specified in their contract.
-
If the grant is used for purposes other than those other than those specified in the contract.
-
If fulfilling the terms of the contract becomes unfeasible.
-
If the translation is deemed substandard by the evaluation committee.
-
If the grant recipient engages in actions that damage the Foundation's reputation.
-
If the grant recipient is convicted of a misdemeanor.
3)
Matters not covered in these guidelines will be handled in accordance with the Foundation's bylaws and rules.
